The main goal of this paper is to investigate the semantico-pragmatic contribution of the novel type of ku combining with wh-indeterminates. Given that the traditional role of ku is associated with demonstrative and definiteness, the occurrence of ku with wh-indeterminates would result in an identifiability mismatch because wh-indeterminates are inherently intensional, and they cannot have ostensive denotation or refer back to anaphoric reference. Given the set of empirical data, my proposal is that ku with wh-indeterminates can be characterized as a modal determiner. In this sense, the modal determiner ku is akin to so of wh-soever in English. Further, our claim is supported by corpus study by showing that the licensing environment of modal determiner ku is similar toWwh-ever rather than any. Specifically, with the full range of phenomena, I suggest the following five features, i.e., polarity, contextual domain restriction, lack of scalarity, contrastive focus and maximality, as core properties of modal determiner. Notably, I subsume the expanded uses of ku under the more general analysis of contrastive focus and maximality, which can be conceptually linked to the distinct realm of demonstrative/definite ku and its stretched modal use.
