This paper aims to identify how music app design can be improved by tailoring it to a particular user group. As a case study, Apple Music was chosen as an app, and Koreans in their 40s as the target demographic.
Initially, we did a thorough product analysis to learn more about the users and their relationship with the service. Online survey, interview and collage-making were conducted to identify the aesthetic and usability preferences of the target user group.
We identified the aspects of Apple Music’s visual style that alienated our target audience: the bright neon colors and the “party aesthetic”, which were inconsistent with the gentle music sensibilities of the target audience. In addition, it was described as “foreign” by the Korean users, which we attributed to a lack of consideration for Korean design trends. Moreover, we found incongruencies between the desired functionality of a music streaming app and the currently existing features.
The findings can be taken into consideration in the service development process to improve both usability and desirability of Apple Music and other streaming services.
