    Hibiscus manihot root mucilage is a material used for manufacturing Hanji (Korean traditional handmade paper). It makes fibers uniformly dispersed and enables the production of high-quality Hanji. This study evaluated how the changes in Hibiscus manihot root mucilage quantity and temperature affected the characteristics of Hanji. When producing Hanji, the dehydration time increased with the increase in the amount of Hibiscus manihot root mucilage. Additionally, the formation and tensile strength improved, but they deteriorated when the input exceeded a certain amount. At elevated temperatures, the pH of Hibiscus manihot root mucilage remained constant, but its viscosity decreased. Nevertheless, at high-temperatures, a non-uniform sheet was formed, and the tensile strength of Hanji decreased. In summary, the present study confirmed that a suboptimal amount of Hibiscus manihot root mucilage, and high temperature could deteriorate the quality of Hanji. The study results suggest that the physical property of Hanji produced in summer may change due to the characteristics of Hibiscus manihot root mucilage.
