Background: Macaques are often used as recipients in preclinical transplantation research. There are some fasting for various purposes in transplantation research and anorexia are often seen when macaques are sick. A decrease in food intake means a decrease in crude fiber intake resulting in the decrease of fecal volume and constipation. When constipation is severe, this can lead to loss of appetite and a vicious cycle. Therefore, it is important to prevent and to treat constipation. In humans, the amount of crude fiber that should be ingested per day is determined and ingesting less than that of crude fiber increases the likelihood of causing constipation. Psyllium (commercially available bulk-forming agents) are crude fiber supplements that expand with water to increase bulk of the stool and enhance bowel movements and has superior efficacy in treating constipation. In this paper, we report on the treatment and prevention of constipation using psyllium in macaques with constipation after transplantation.
