Objective: This paper proposes a deeper analysis of the System Usability Scale (SUS) results, looking for a relationship between the number of usability problems (UPs) reported through usability study and the overall SUS scores as well as individual item scores. Background: A list of UPs is a common and important outcome of usability evaluation. In addition to UPs, various types of qualitative and quantitative data can be collected from usability studies by utilizing different methods. The SUS is a well-established questionnaire commonly used to quantitatively assess the perceived usability of products and systems, consisted of 5 positive and 5 negative statements rated on a Likert scale. Method: An experiment was conducted with 24 evaluators, where 4 different Augmented Reality (AR) applications were inspected to find UPs, and SUS questionnaire answers were collected at the end. Results: The results show a significant correlation between the number of UPs reported and SUS scores. More specifically, the number of UPs reported correlates with overall scores and negative item scores. Conclusion: The SUS scores (overall and individual item scores) could be indicators of the number of UPs reported by evaluators through usability study. Application: The findings of this study could help improve the way that the overall SUS score is calculated by giving higher weight to the most relevant SUS items (in relation to the number of UPs reported). Also, analysis of individual item scores could give an insight into the system and its issues, especially when only SUS results are available to the usability practitioners and developers.
