In this paper, we will discuss how the French gaze on the violent aspects of the war, such as torture, violence, and terrorism during the Algerian War, and how discussions over the dark side of the Algerian War, which have been raised over 40 years later, are progressing in France to the present day. War, especially the “colonial war” or “colonial liberation war” aimed at maintaining or clearing governance and subordinate relationships, is related to the problem of violence in that various violent conflicts such as torture and terrorism emerge in the process. The Algerian War, which fought between France and Algeria from 1954 to 1962, is characterized by a violent way of not only conflict between the ruling country and the colonial country, but also within the ruling country and within the colony.
In this study, we look at the case of France because it is practical and useful to look at the French perception of the past, the French attitude toward violence during the Algerian War, and various discussions in France about the unfortunate history of the past. The meaning of “possible” means that historical sources related to the Algerian War, which had been forbidden for a long time, were gradually opened to allow researchers to study on this subject. What can be said to be “useful” is that it is in terms of being able to examine the historical perceptions surrounding the colonial issue of the Western powers. In particular, it can be meaningful and useful to examine how human rights and human dignity are discussed and recognized in the abnormal and unconscious situation of war in France, which claims to be a country of human rights and equality.
