The purpose of this study was to investigate the planning process of outdoor space at an elementary school considering users such as students, teachers, and parents. The elementary school at Jeonbuk province was selected for the study and the researchers performed a spatial analysis of the school outdoor situation, idea competition, workshops, and meetings with the users. The results were as follows. First, the students needed accessible places for playing and relaxing since the site had facilities that were far away from the classroom. Second, as a result of idea competition for outdoor space, the students needed to perform playing and relaxing function and mostly wanted to have facilities for playing. The senior students needed to perform various studying and communication function with friends besides playing and relaxing. Third, the user workshops showed that they preferred facility arrangements having a central theme and commonly liked playing, relaxing, studying, and landscape. They liked to more have multi-purpose facilities such as a small hill or deck square, and for free play, items such as a hammock, tunnel, or playing road rather than simple play equipment. Lastly, through the user meetings, a deck square was selected as the central theme. The facilities for playing, relaxing, communication, events, landscape, and movement were arranged around the deck. The results of this study may not be applicable to schools with different situations. However, they will provide helpful information for elementary schools that are small-sized or have limited outdoor spaces.
