Phlorotannins are polyphenolic compounds that are formed by polymerizing phloroglucinol. They have a wide range of molecular weights. Brown seaweeds are high in phlorotannins, which have a variety of biological properties such as anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and algicidal properties. To date, many review papers have been published on the chemical quantification and characterization of phlorotannins and their functionality.
