Recently, deterioration of the marine environment becomes more critical issue in aquaculture business due to the increased interest on environmental sustainability. Domestic aquaculture for olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus is mainly practiced with flow-through systems. For the past 3 decades, appropriate effluent treatment processes have not been applied and fish metabolites have seemingly accumulated in the areas, causing current highly increased mortality in cultured flounder. Thus the quality of intaking seawater is very subject to the discharged water and pathogens. To reduce the incoming probability of pathogens, fish farms were often equipped with sterilization devices for intaking water. However most devices are unlikely in use due to the lack of expertise in installation and operation. It is intrinsically impractical to treat the large volume of intaking and effluent water to prevent disease outbreak and metabolite discharge. Thus a preliminary study was conducted to develop a numerical model of water quality dynamics and evaluate fish growth performance. In this study, mass Balance Approach was run to firstly establish an water quality dynamic model.
