In the current seismic design criteria, the concept of a strong column-weak beam is introduced to induce a plastic hinge to occur first in the beam. However, when a strong lateral load such as an earthquake is applied, permanent deformation will inevitably remain on the column, such permanent deformation causes serious problems in the serviceability of the building.
