Following the logic of ‘culture-capability-performance’ and building on the theory of organizational culture and crisis management, this study constructs a conceptual model consisting of a firm’s experimental culture (action promotion, error tolerance, trust, and support), improvisation capability, and its performances. Using a sample of 196 firms, we test our hypotheses and find that trust and support had a significant, positive impact on a firm’s spontaneity, while the effect of action promotion and error tolerance were not significant. Action promotion, trust, and support demonstrate significant positive effects on the creativity of a firm while the error tolerance does not have any significant effect. We also find that both dimensions of improvisation capability have significant positive influence on a firm’s performance. These findings contribute to our understanding of the relationship between a firm’s experimental culture, improvisation capability and its performance. Additionally, the results of the study may help researchers better understand both the antecedents and performance implications of the improvisation capability.
