Few extracts and single compounds from Ecklonia cava have been reported to exhibit antitumor activity in breast cancer and ovarian cancer, but the effects of a tannin-enriched hot water extract of E. cava (TEE) in colon cancer have not been determined. To recognize the anti-tumor activity of tannin-enriched hot water extract of Ecklonia cava (TEE) against CT26 (colon carcinoma) cells, variations in the tumor growth, histopathological structure, and the molecular mechanism were analyzed in CT26 tumor bearing BALB/cKorl mice, after administration of TEE. This hot water extract contains high levels of total condensed tannin content (326.5 mg/g), and exhibited high inhibitory activity (IC50 = 30.25 mg/ml) against DPPH radicals.
