The common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) have been proposed as an appropriate bridge between rodents and large primates due to their similar ophthalmological features to large primates and humans. Furthermore, the success of the availability and use of genetic engineering techniques in marmosets not only broadens our understanding of congenital ophthalmic diseases but can also be applied to the development of gene therapy. Prenatal ultrasonography is a powerful diagnostic technique that can detect various congenital eye malformations arising during the developmental process, such as anophthalmia, microphthalmia, coloboma, aniridia, and optic nerve hypoplasia.
