The primary objective of the present study was to revisit the acquisition of Korean nominative and accusative particles by English speakers. Relevant studies have been mainly done in L1 acquisition, according to which Korean children overused nominative particles prior to their mastery of the case particles. The characteristics of the adult L2 developmental process of learning case marking remain unsettled. Some studies reported L2 learners" learning patterns were similar to L1 child’s while others observed that this was not the case. In light of such challenges, this study examined the spoken data of a total of 31 native English speakers at intermediate and advanced levels. The Korean learners" production data were obtained from the recordings of mock oral proficiency interviews. The results revealed that, unlike L1 children, there was no discrepancy between the omission rates of nominative and accusative particles. The lower and higher proficiency learners also tended to overgeneralize accusative markers. These findings provided a ground for reconsidering the L2 acquisition of Korean case markers in terms of the nominative-accusative asymmetry. Pedagogical implications for the classroom were also suggested.
