The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage of modality final ending ‘-ulgga(yo)’ in spoken Korean language. The literature has mainly studied the semantic function and syntactic restriction of the final ending deductively, with few focusing on the realistic language usage. Hence, this study, based on an analysis of balanced corpus of spoken language, aims to investigate the actual usage in a inductive manner. The usage of ‘-ulgga(yo)’ is divided into morphosyntactic usage and sematic usage. For its morphosyntactic usage, the form of ‘-ulgga(yo)’, whether ‘-ulgga(yo)’ is located in the final or non-final position in a sentence, whether a pre-final ending precedes and, if so, the type of the pre-final ending, whether the subject of the sentence is first, second, or third person, and the category of predicate combining with ‘-ulgga(yo)’. In order to investigate the sematic usage, the final ending is divided into epistemic modality ‘-ulgga(yo)’ and act modality ‘-ulgga(yo)’, and the corelation between the two modalities and the morphosyntactic usage is investigated. Thus, this study provides an overall picture of how speakers of Korean language use modality final ending ‘-ulgga(yo)’ actually in spoken language.
