The purpose of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of business succession in Japanese SMEs. The need for the study stems from the fact that one of the most important tasks of Korean SMEs may be the issue of business succession. As a result of analyzing several exemplary business succession cases, the following conclusions could be drawn. First, a business succession is not be limited to maintaining the inherited management resources, and involves attempts to evolve those management resources in any way or form. Second, successful business successions often include business diversification centered on the main business. Based on the management resources inherited from the predecessors, the main business, which is the basis of the business, is improved in accordance with the changes of the times. Third, successful SMEs while modifying or improving on the main business, do not stray far from it. They create new products in response to the evolving market's demand on the basis of intellectual assets that their predecessors have built over a long period of time. Fourth, as a result, such an evolution of the main business naturally opens up new markets. In order to sustain the management of the inherited SMEs, the fundamental rule that successors should abide by is to evolve the existing main business.
