This article offers a structural reading of Maut dan Cinta (Death and Love), a novel by Mochtar Lubis (1922?2004), one of the major figures in modern Indonesian literature. The article undertakes this task to answer one key question: How does Mochtar Lubis use characterization to construct and tell his story? After first examining, comparing, and contrasting the novel’s individual characters and their personalities, the paper goes on to analyze how these characters interact with one another. Several findings result from this structural reading. First, two central characters, Sadeli and Umar Yunus, turn out to be as complex as they are dynamic. Two, the secondary characters, Hawkins and Tan Ciat Tong, are rather static and under-developed. Yet both of them serve to highlight the personality of Sadeli as the novel’s protagonist. Third, Mochtar Lubis employs this characterization strategy to dramatize how the quest for Indonesia’s independence played out in and contributed to the lives of some of the freedom fighters.
