This study aims to investigate L2 acquisition of Korean short form negation by Chinese-speaking and English-speaking learners. In terms of the choice and placement of negative morphemes in short form negation, whether L2 learners from different L1 backgrounds show different developmental aspects, and whether their performance improves as proficiency increases were examined based on the data from Korean Learners" Corpus by National Institute of Korean Language. This study suggests distinct L2 learning tasks for each L1 group based on L1-L2 featural differences assuming the Feature-Reassembly Hypothesis (Lardiere, 2009). The results show that the use of negative morpheme mos by English-speaking learners at early stage of development was significantly more infrequent than Chinese-speaking learners at the same proficiency level. Regarding the placement of negative morphemes in light verb constructions, the percentages of errors of both L1 groups decreased as their proficiency improved. These findings suggest that correct productions of Korean short-form negation tend to be influenced by both learners" L1 and proficiency. The results seem to support the Feature-Reassembly Hypothesis in that the different feature configuration in L1 from that in L2 should constitute the source of learning difficulties, but it is acquirable.
