The current study aims to explore the features of EFL students’ noticing processes in producing an English L2 text. It attempts to examine what Korean EFL university learners notice while they are writing an English essay and whether learners’ L2 proficiency has an impact on their noticing. To achieve the research aim, thirty-five college students were recruited, and the think-aloud protocol method was employed for data collection. All participants were asked to perform an argumentative writing task in English and to verbally express their thoughts while writing an English text. The results showed that learners noticed approximately five lexical or grammatical problems while writing an English text for 20 minutes and that they verbalised more lexical than grammatical episodes. It was also found that L2 English proficiency affected EFL learners’ noticing, indicating that less proficient learners noticed more lexical or grammatical episodes than more proficient learners. Based on the findings, implications for instructing English writing are discussed, and suggestions for future research are proposed.
