The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of picturesque in the Townscape Movement. Townscape was developed throughout the 1940s and 1950s in association with the Picturesque revival carried out by the editors of the British architectural magazine the Architectural Review. The Movement was largely supported by the British government, however, picturesque urban plans implemented by the government encountered criticism from the young architects for being too sentimental. As a result, although the ideas of Picturesque were central to the formation of Townscape theory, it was not discussed much later, and much of the uptake of picturesque ideas in contemporary urban planning has been forgotten. The following study proposes that the idea of Picturesque in Townscape was to consider human participation in urban planning, and through the characteristics of ‘serial vision’ and ‘collage’ of Townscape’s Picturesque, it provided a model of understanding the complexity of the post-war urban landscape.
