Objectives ： We evaluated the differences in drinking patterns, motivation, and problems related to drinking alcohol according to Lesch’s typology. Methods ： We included patients who were diagnosed with alcohol use disorder according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria by a review of the medical record. The patient completed alcohol scales [Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Tests (AUDIT) and Drinking Motivation Scale] in this study. The Patients were classified into four Lesch types by using a computerized Lesch Alcohol Typology (LAT) program. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results ： Lesch type 2 patients (anxiety model) were the most common, followed by type 3(depressive model) and type 1(allergy model). No one was classified as type 4 (conditioning model). The proportion of women classified as type 3 was relatively higher than those classified as types 1 and 2. Coping motivation was higher than other motivations in all Lesch types. Scores on the dependence subscales of AUDIT and social motivation were not correlated. In patients classified as Lesch type 2, social motivation was relatively higher than in patients classified as types 1 and 3. There was a higher level of enhancing motivation in type 3 patients than in types 1 and 2. Social motivation was relatively lower in type 1 patients than in types 2 and 3. Conclusion : There were some significant differences in drinking motivation according to Lesch’s typology. Given the heterogeneous nature of alcohol use disorders, understanding the characteristics of Lesch’s typology of drinking motivation will help to apply individualized therapy.
