Purpose: This study aims to empirically scrutinize if modern earthen architecture provides quality environment that contemporary people can accept and if it meets the technical and social conditions required by an industrialized society. Method: This study qualitatively examined the environmental properties of earth buildings by means of an analyzing framework which analyzed, re-stratified and re-structured all detailed evaluation items from the eco-friendly building certification system being implemented in four countries. With this framework, modern earth buildings in I housing complex near Villefontaine in Rhône-Alpes region, France, and S village in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea were scrutinized, by interviewing researchers and occupants who were actually involved in them. Result: First of all, it yields that the indoor environment formed by earthen architecture is even healthier and more comfortable than that by conventional modern architecture, that is, modern earthen architecture has great habitability. And then, it is also found that passive design using the high thermal capacity of earth which has been noticed since the early days, actually reduces energy consumption during the building operation stage. Finally, it is revealed the fact that legal and technical supplementation is necessary for earthen architecture to be more feasible. By the way, to secure the feasibility required in modern society, there"s no way for earthen architecture but to be industrialized. Therefore, it is imperative to be on guard whether the genuine sustainability of earthen architecture fades out involuntarily, given that this had not been possible with conventional modern architecture.
