This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a corpus-based dictionary for middle school students’ English vocabulary learning by comparing the learners’ vocabulary learning using a corpus-based dictionary and a non corpus-based dictionary. A total of 72 first graders from a private middle school in Ulsan City participated in this study. They were divided into three groups: two experimental groups and one control group. The first experimental group included 24 students who were taught using a corpus-based monolingual dictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE 5, 2009, DVD-ROM). The second experimental group of 24 students were taught using a non corpus-based bilingual dictionary (Doosan Dong-a Prime English-Korean dictionary, 2008) from NAVER (Internet online) dictionary. The control group of twenty-four students engaged in a teacher-centered vocabulary learning without a dictionary. The vocabulary learning was based on three synonyms: say/tell, big/large, and catch/hold. Each group had a total of twelve lessons for a period of six weeks during the regular English classes. By analyzing the date from pre- and post-tests, it was found that, while there were no significant differences in the pre-test results between the three groups, significant differences emerged regarding the post-test results. Post-hoc analysis revealed that the first experimental group’s test score was higher than the second experimental group and the control group. Moreover, as for the differences between pre- and post-test results, two experimental groups showed significantly higher scores in the post-test with the first experimental group exhibiting a greater increase. The control group did not show any significant differences. These results indicate that learning of synonyms using dictionaries can be effective for middle school students with the corpus-based monolingual dictionary being more beneficial.
