‘Korean Diaspora Literature’ refers to the literary works of North and South Korea, which are in different forms, and those of Koreans living abroad such as in the US, Japan, China, and Central Asia. The definition is in terms of literary norm as well as the liminality within different cultures. The writers in diaspora literature usually live in double language and culture, and these dual experience are shown in their works through diverse characters who deal with double life and troubles within. In the past, the narrow mind of ‘territorial principal’(속지주의, 屬地主義) was dominant in Korean literature history: only those which were produced inside of Korean territory belong to Korean literature. However, the Koreans living abroad are now over 7 million, and those with Korean nationality have obtained the right to vote. The territorial principal have been taken down its power. Another traditional concern was ‘personal principal’(속인주의, 屬人主義), which discusses the creator of diaspora literture and his nationality. This matter is also fading away these days. ‘Language principal’(속문주의, 屬文主義), which values the language in literature and whether it is the writer’s mother language, is along with the same line. Besides these three, main theme or target audience of diaspora literature could also be in the topic of discussion. The important thing is not to focus on the outer factors, but to do on core matters. In other words, each literary piece should be valued on the ‘degree’ of containing elements of Korean literature rather than the ‘qualification’ and whether it can be called as Korean literature. If the diaspora literature is to be the flower blooming in the Korean literary garden, the responsibility of cultivating and growing it out also belongs to the Korean literary world. And the first step should be the invitation to the North Korean literature into this literary garden. The perspective of confrontation between South and North Korean literature is not going to be helpful for the integration. The diaspora literature, which is based on the 70 years of partition and restoration of independence, has reached to the point of healing and embracing at the moment. This new direction of unifying South and North Korean, Korean-American, Korean-Japanese, Korean-Chinese, and Korean-Central Asian literature is the royal summon of contemporary scholars. This long-term project is now to start a scholarly road as well as requiring more in-depth study in the field.
