Purpose As ageing population over the world grows rapidly,more implantable devices need to get involved and developedto be used as reliable biocompatible replacements, substitutes,biosensors or patient-specific drug delivery systems. Thanksto fast-growing biomedical technologies, the devices madeof metals, polymers, ceramics, or gels are being developedfor the use of various purposes helping doctors and patientsto find better solutions in coping with health problems. In thepresent study, the deformation of an implantable devicemade of polymers is calculated numerically owing to thecapillary force by the interaction between the device andsurrounding body fluid. Methods The total energy, which consists of the bulk energyand the surface energy, undergoes a minimization processwhich results in variational equations to be solved with finiteelement method. Results Three different models made of polymers forimplantable devices to be immersed in a fluid where thesurface tension prevails are considered. The simulation resultclearly shows that the edges of the models get roundedowing to the surface tension interacting between the deviceand the surrounding fluid. Conclusions The numerical simulation via finite elementmethod shows a glimpse of how much capillary effect maycause deformation when an implantable device once it isimmersed. It is expected that the present study may be utilizedto earn good attention for design of safer implantable device.
