초록· 키워드

The purpose of this study is to emphasize the significance of communicative functions. Communicative competence is of paramount importance in learning and teaching English. However, many teachers and learners are likely to neglect this ability in the classroom. This study was conducted during the second semester in 2012. The subjects were 120, 1st year high school students. They were divided into two groups, control and experimental. The control group and experimental group composed of 60, respectively. The experimental group was tested by means of the items of communicative functions, while the control group was tested in terms of those of CSAT. Independent sample t-test was performed to determine; (a) the difference between control and experimental groups; (b) the difference of the control and experimental groups on the affective domains such as students’ interest,self-confidence, motivation. This results show that many learners did not know communicative functions very well. So they should be communicatively competent. It is recommended that learners should learn much more communicative functions in the classroom than grammaticality. Furthermore teachers should be ready to teach students communicative functions in the classroom.
