This paper aims to analyse Henry James’s The Ambassadors in the aspect of man’s marriage and search for his identity. In general, James pursues closely the process of change in characters’ consciousness before and after their marriages, and reveals the problem of their search for identity. While he intensively deals with woman’s marriage and consciousness change in his many novels and stories, James focuses on a middle-aged man’s marriage and identity in The Ambassadors. Strether, the hero of the novel, goes to Paris to take Chad back to America at his mother’s request. But in Paris, Strether is aware of sense of loss about himself and his past in which he couldn’t live as he wanted to in the time of his youth. He thinks that he lost something valuable like passion or love in his younger days. So he advices Chad and his friend Bilham to live as they want to and not to lose precious things in their youth. In the end, after his awakening of his own life and lost past, Strether pursues his identity through renouncing his duty as an ambassador in spite of a greater reward such as marriage with Mrs. Newsome. Thus James shows the process of change of Strether’s consciousness.
