This essay focuses on the interplay of visual images in Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic(2006). Positioned at the intersection of image, narrative, autobiography and fiction, Bechdel’s text exemplifies the notion, argued persuasively by feminist theorists, that the female autobiographical self comes into hybrid narration through a significant relation to others. While the conventional feminist model of a “relational self” draws upon the thematic aspects of the female autobiography, this essay shows how the visual images that Bechdel employs in her graphic narrative work to prove the theme of relationality in the generic level of narrative technique. Fun Home offers an intricately layered narrative language that comprises the text, the visual image, and the way these two representational modes interact on a page. However, Bechdel makes an additional play for a new level of storytelling by larding her pages with various visual images which do not have direct connections to the texts they attend. In bringing the same visual images together in comparison and juxtaposition, Bechdel shows, via their reciprocal interaction with the theme of the narrative, how each image draws upon, and contributes to, discourses elucidating subjectivity and its signatures in hybridized autobiographical narrative.
