The science museum often serves as an education institution by providing the audience with informal sciencelearning. In particular, a variety of hands-on experiences such as performing simple experiments and observations are essentialparts of life science education and more important than in other fields. However, our science education system is focused onthe college entrance examinations, and thus, developing students’ scientific interests has not been a major concern. Thepermanent exhibition system of most science museums cannot efficiently convey the essence of modern biotechnology, and inorder to show the current status, a temporary exhibition must be considered as a promising alternative. In this study, wesurveyed domestic temporary exhibitions and analyzed ones held in foreign countries. At present, temporary exhibitions in thefield of life sciences in Korea are mostly focused on the collection and display of natural objects related to ecology, and only afew deal with current biotechnology. By contrast, successful exhibitions in the United States and other European countries coverdiverse topics in the field of life sciences by actively employing temporary exhibitions. It is important for successful life scienceexhibition to cooperate among exhibition planners, scientists, education experts, and research institutes at the planning stage. Inaddition, temporary exhibitions can be made more easily accessible to the public in the form of travelling exhibition. To facilitatetraveling exhibitions, a close network between science museums is required, and the education materials and information shouldbe available on a website.
