Surrealism is an art movement, which is differentiated from existing aesthetics of the 20th century by expressing the world of dream, time and unconsciousness, inducing an interface between the surreal world and the real world and attempting to enlarge the real world, unlike other art movements. With the advancement in media technologies, film has become a stage to nicely describe the surreal world that is hard to express. Film is a stage, which can express a surrealistic space and spaces in films are expressed in various ways depending on the director's intention. Christopher Nolan, one of the directors, who express spaces in films using surrealistic characteristics, describes spaces in films, based on surrealistic materials like dream, memory and time. Many of films directed by Christopher Nolan inspire architects or designers by providing spatial ideas. This paper analyzes surrealistic spatial characteristics in Christopher Nolan's films, based on a theoretical foundation of spatial characteristics in surrealistic films, after considering surrealism, surrealistic films and spatial characteristics. This paper aims to understand spaces in films directed by Christopher Nolan and establish the applicability of surrealism to spatial design by analyzing surrealistic spatial characteristics expressed in his films.
