This study investigate to identify the meanings of one Japanese word, utsu, which means “to hit” and its relevance among them. The result shows the meanings of utsu are classified into 16 meanings, on which this study clarifies the polysemic structure of the word to show one prototypical meaning semantically extenses to other meanings by mataphor or metonymy.
This study starts from recognizing utsu as a polysemic word, because the meanings belong to different semantic categories one another and its common meanings are too abstract. After that, this study overviews the previous studies about utsu to point out the problems.
This study points out that there is a difference among semantic field of synonyms on an account of the setting of plural division of polysemic senses.
Japanese verb utsu has many meanings and looking for their lowest common denominator leads to too abstract meanings. Therefore, this study assumes that meanings of utsu are related by polysemy. This idea is investigated in comparision with previous work on utsu. In 1.4, the Metapholic Points of Views on Cognitive Linguistics, such as network model (Langacker 1988), metaphor, and metonimy, are described.As a result, utsu has 16 kinds of meanings, from whose fundamental ones semantically related meanings are shown.At the end, this study tells how valid polysemic structures are to tell the meanings of utsu, and more discussions would be required for further analysis.
