In Korea, studies on regional literature have been organized and systemized since the late 1990s. Not only have these studies sought a variety of approaches as a whole such as methodological, literary historical, literary educational, and literary geographical approaches, but also many discussions have been made on regional writers, characteristics and spirits of native literature, literature related to local events, regional literary magazines, and local literary history. Among future challenges occurring when studying regional literature, “challenge on study methods and attitudes” is the starting point. It is important that regional writers have an “regional eye” among other things. It is also imperative to strengthen liveliness and interdisciplinary research, and vitalize positive research looking into the correlation between dialects or regional traditional modes and regional literature. Next, in order to face “challenges on the system and organization”, there should be tools to activate research on regional literature such as local universities' curriculum. Research organizations should be established in each regional area, and it is also urgent to set up academic circles to tie researcher on regional literature in a systematic way.
