Chopin's The Awakening employs birds as a metaphor for the entrapment the protagonist, Edna experiences. The novel begins with description of birds within cages. The birds symbolize women in the man dominated society in the 19th century, and the cages, their sphere, houses. Another symbol, the sea, helps her awaken her dormant artistic nature and her suppressed sexuality. Edna begins to realize her restrained position under the marriage and motherhood, and try to search for her true self. As a part of her search, she moves into a house of her own choosing from a chosen house by her husband making herself a subject with ownership. She, on the one hand, struggles to become independent economically through selling her pictures, on the other hand, dreams a romantic love with Robert. However she realizes she is not allowed to realize both dreams in the society. The bird with broken wings in the last scene hints Edna's suicide. Edna confronts her death heroically. She seems to find the way of protecting her soul from the death through killing her body, the house of her soul.
