The Korean Christian Right is closely connected to its counterpart in the United States. This article examined the theological-ideological perspective of the Korean Christian Right in comparison with the American Religious Right. Just like the American phenomenon, the Korean Christian Right is based upon a fundamentalist world-view which understands the world in a dualistic way. Its members see the world sharply divided into good and evil, which they believe is readily discernable. They believe that their society is corrupt and in crisis, and want to save it. The American Religious Right believes that “secular humanism” is the embodiment of evil and hence the source of all sins and cultural corruption. But the Korean Christian Right is more ideologically inclined and sees Communism and whom it regards as pro-Communists the arch enemy. The Korean Christian Right launched a campaign to get rid of all pro-Communist or leftist elements in Korea in order to save it. It is surprising that the Religious Right willingly cooperates with Catholics, Mormons, and even Muslims whom its members traditionally considered as “heretics” and “gentiles”. The leaders of the Korean Christian Right tries to distance themselves from what they call the “Old Right” leaders, those traditional rightists who many Koreans believe were responsible for previous dictatorial regimes. And they identify their ideal with “liberalism.” However, they only intend to embrace economic neo-liberalism. In fact, they have revealed a totalitarian tendency by a lack of tolerance toward progressive activities. The Religious Right is a broad coalition of religious-political-economic interests; and so-called “evangelical” Christians, the basis of the Religious Right’s political power, also consist of many conflicting elements. Without fully understanding this complexity, the Korean Christian Right will face hardship in mustering wider support.
