This paper attempts to explore the images of Korean protestantism viewed as by Ham Seok-Heon(1901-1989). Roman Catholic church, according to him, at first, seemed to play as a role of “new religion” in late Chosun dynasty. Yet, Roman Catholicism failed to accomplish such a role, because it lacked historical consciousness. Protestantism, as a successor of Roman Catholicism, started as a progressive and advanced religion, attempting to reform Korean traditional culture and society. In his view, protestant church played the role of a “new religion” in Korea before 1919. Protestant church,however, after March 1st Movement, gradually become a “old religion.” Since then, protestant church’s attitude to world become not progressive but conservative.
The church leaders’ struggle for hegemony resulted in great schism in protestant church. The protestant churches, also, especially some protestant sects, become immersed in prophecy and spiritual movement. Ham Seok-Heon concluded that protestant church could regain a status of “new religion” in future Korea, if it tries to become a ethical religion based on historical consciousness.
