The recent discourses on nanotechnology and cybernet have changed the patterns of human lives and their politics of identity. The broad range of applications of nanotechnology also can offer us a new way of envisaging the relation of technology to culture. This paper examines the culture and women's education in the age of nanotechnology focusing on Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer. Stephenson focuses on the effects of cultural inheritance in the advanced nanotechnological society. His construction of nanotechnological future is not a simple elaboration of the new technological development. The relations of new technology, culture and education of the community are also explored from multiple perspectives. In particular, the main strand of various narratives which deals with Nell's education vividly dramatizes the relation of technology and culture. The young girl's primer based on nanotechnology is helpful to reconfigure women's identities in an increasingly dominant technoscientific age. The primer plays an important role in liberating young women's minds from the bonds of Neo-Victorian future. The Neo-Victorian culture focuses on order and morality, while the interactive system of the primer aims at leading the young women beyond these bounds to a fuller realization of human potential. The primer's educational cyberspace and its ractor lead Nell to develop herself as a free and powerful member of community. In particular, Nell's formation of the new identity as a political leader is juxtaposed with the dawning transition from the Feed to the Seed technology developed by China. The emergence of new technology and cultural paradigm shows the possibility that women can generate a field within which the new phase of culture and community might be constructed.
