Objectives : Suicide has become the most serious public health problem in Korea. Especially suicide attempt by jumping has resulted in the fatal outcome. In this study, we investigated the demographic and clinical characteristics of those who attempted suicide by jumping from river bridge. Methods : Medical records of patients who were treated at the emergency room following suicide attempt by jumping from river bridge were reviewed. Demographic data and clinical characteristics including clinical diagnosis, family history, past psychiatric treatment,and previous suicide attempts were examined. Results : About half of patients (55.3%) have been diagnosed with major depression and 55.3% of attempters were in drunken state at the time of attempt. Most of suicide attempters (74.5%) were discharged against medical advise from emergency department. The most common reasons for attempted suicide in men was work pressure/business failure (42.9%) and relationship problem with spouse or lover in women (46.2%). Conclusion : Although most of suicide attempter by jumping from river bridge had been diagnosed with psychiatric disorder, refusal of psychiatric treatment was very common. Result may help to inform clinical decision regarding treatment of suicidal patients by jumping. (J of Kor Soc for Dep and Bip Disorders 2011;9:206-211)
