This paper attempts to discover the effects of Korean War on South and North Korea's urbanization, comparing the urbanization processes of Seoul and Pyeongyang before and after the war.Under the Japan's imperial rule, two traditional cities have together trod the path of colonial urbanization. But Korean War had strong influences on their urbanization paths. On the one hand, the war separated their paths into capitalist and socialist urbanization. On the other hand, it made them tread the similar path to clear the colonial vestiges and to have the appearances of 'war city', 'barrack city'.Consequently Korean War greatly transformed their urban landscapes and population structures, while functioning as a double-edged sword of urban destruction and reconstruction. Therefore it is assumed that Korean War was an important watershed of South and North Korean urbanization.
