This research were tried to utilize fly ash from municipal solid waster incineration (MSWI) as a starting material to produce an adsorbent were prepared from MSWI fly ash by chemical activation with coal tar pitch and K2CO3 as carbon source and activating agent, respectively. The optimum conditions for K2CO3 activation to derive maximum iodine adsorption capacity and BET surface area were investigated; conditions found were a mixing ratio of hydrothermally treated fly ash/coal tar pitch/K2CO3 of 40/40/20 wt%, activation temperature of 800℃, a hold time of 1h, and N2 flow rate of 30ml/min, respectively. Under these conditions, iodine adsorption capacity and BET surface area for prepared adsorbent were 508mg/g and 179㎡/g, respectively. The adsorptive capacity of the prepared adsorbent was associated with adsorption temperature and concentration of the adsorbate. The porosity of the adsorbent prepared in this study with chemical activation was not so developed as the commercial carbon for adsorption capacity. Nevertheless, fly ash has a potential as a raw material for preparation of good active adsorbent for C6H6 adsorption.
