Tailings from an abandoned mine could be recycled by starting materials of porous ceramic media. Slurries with high solid contents are essential to making porous ceramic media by solid foaming method. In this study, sedimentation test and viscosity measurement were performed in order to examine properties of grinding slurries with high tailings contents. The tailings were sampled from the Sangdong tungsten mine. Grinding slurries with high tailings contents were produced using the 1 attrition mill. Grinding conditions were 0.5 in 5㎜ ball charge ratio and 700rpm in stirring speed. Dispersibility of tailings slurry was most excellent in strongly basic pH range. Also, pH of grinding slurry of tailings was about pH 11. Therefore, grinding slurries with high tailings contents had good properties for stable dispersion. However, suitable particle size and slurry viscosity for making of porous ceramic media was not produced in the case of grinding without a surfactant in tailings slurry. On the other hand, good dispersive and stable slurries with high tailings contents were produced by milling during 2 hours in the case of adding 1-5wt% of Polyethyleneimine(PEI), that is, a cationic surfactant in tailings slurry.
