This study aimed to measure the actual use of vocabulary by elementary school students by analyzing the words in their diaries. The total 669 diaries of 203 students were analyzed in terms of word types and word tokens. The results were as follows. First, vocabulary in elementary school students' diaries was composed of 1838 word types and 32899 word tokens. The average word tokens in each diary were 49.18. Second, females than males, 6th than 5th graders, and higher level students showed greater use of word tokens. Third, when analyzed by categories, content words were used more than function words in both word type and token. And 305 word types and 4849 tokens were used to cover 12 topics closely related to elementary school students. Compared to the words in the 7th National Curriculum Vocabulary List, 503 word types and 26388 word tokens corresponded to the List. However, 1192 word types which were not included in the List were used by the students, and 97 of them showed more than 10 times in diaries.
