Yoon, Eunmee. 2004. A cpmparison between politeness strategies utilized by native Korean speakers and learners of Korean in act of refusal. Teaching Koreans as a Foreign Language, 29, 117~145. Brown & Levinson(1987) contend that conversation is ruled by the participants' desire to maintain each others’ face, and present politeness strategies which are universally applicable to all languages. Politeness strategies, which alleviate the impact of face-threatening acts, include syntactic or lexical usages of the language. In this paper, these usages are called 'linguistic devices'. This paper aims to identify what linguistic devices Korean native speakers use and how they differ according to the social position of and the solidarity with the hearers in Korean refusals. It then compares the results with the usage of linguistic devices by learners of Korean of intermediate or advanced levels to compare the differences between learners and native speakers. The comparison reveals that learners are not able to make skillful use of the linguistic devices, and thus fail in preserving hearers' face. This result arises from neglect in teaching face-protecting uses of grammar and vocabulary items to the learners of Korean as a foreign language. This paper suggests that more attention be paid to the face-protecting usages of grammar and vocabulary while teaching Korean as a foreign language so that learners have a better pragmatic communicative competence.
