This article scrutinizes the Battle of Gunt"oe in 1605 to examine its significance in the changes it brought to the Joseon’s policy on the Jurchens. In the mid-16th century, Joseon tried to establish a fence consisting of Boundary Jurchens against Deep-Dwelling Jurchens. Before Long, with the social changes among the Jurchen tribes, Joseon sought to stabilize the movement of Boundary Jurchens through ‘punitive expeditions’ (征討), thus increasing the frequencies of military operations against the Jurchens in Seonjo’s reign. However, punitive expedition revealed its limitations due to Deep-Dwelling Jurchens such as Jianzhou Jurchen and Hūlun related to Boundary Jurchens. This article articulates that the conflict between Joseon and the Jurchens at Onsung and Jongsung region was directly related to Hūlun, who set up an encampment of Gunt"oe village to put Joseon under pressure for the trade, resulting in clash of arms. To recover its influence on Boundary Jurchens, Joseon operated to eliminate the fort constructed at the Gunt’oe village, but the expedition was failed. Joseon agreed on a truce with Hūlun and by considering them as a Boundary Jurchen tribe, conceded to open trade markets. This arrangement was later applied to their relations with Jianzhou Jurchens. The Battle of Gunt’oe and its aftermath shows the changes in Joseon’s attitude toward the Jurchens, and laid a path to the transition of Joseon-Jurchen relations to Joseon-Manchu relations.
