This study explored information avoidance occurring while searching for information. In-depth interviews were conducted with adult participants who experienced information avoidance while searching for information in various contexts, and the interview data were analyzed using the constant comparison method. The categories related to information searching included information recognition, information seeking purpose, and information search expectations. Individual, information, time, and system factors were related to information avoidance. In the context of information searching, information avoidance was inconsistent with expectations regarding the time spent searching, the amount of information retrieved, and the content of the information relevant to the searcher’s situation and proficiency, and the context. By identifying factors related to information avoidance, the results will facilitate the detection and resolution of information avoidance issues in connection with a macro-framework based on informational, communication, and information system perspectives.
