This article explores the role and subversive aspect of clowns in William Shakespeare’s comedies in terms of subversive aspect. Through a detailed analysis of clown, Touchstone in As You Like It, the article will show how the clown can impose subversive awareness on characters and also give us pleasure with his own wisdom and wit. But, he is not really a fool who knows nothing. In fact, he attempts to tear down the authority and traditions of contemporaries with his intuitive wisdom. In this work, which has a strong characteristic of a rural play, Shakespeare shows a sense of reality rather than romanticism by acknowledging a critical aspect of living in harmony with nature. Through Touchstone, Shakespeare lampoons the folly of people in the customs of society. This critical point of view is strengthened by showing a thoroughly realistic appearance paired with the humor of a clown. In other words, through the carnival behavior of Touchstone with the process of discovering the uncomfortable truth of societal norms, Shakespeare reveals that we can move on to the realization of a slightly better society.
