Time-series soil moisture content (SMC) and NDVI data were analyzed using harmonic analysis to investigate temporal response patterns of NDVI to SMC. Biweekly SMC and NDVI values were well summarized by the first term amplitude and phase of harmonic curves. During the ten-year period, there was a clear offset between peaks of SMC and NDVI. Results showed that the timing of rainfall events were related with maximum NDVI values, and that the earlier the peak SMC, the earlier the maximum NDVI. However, the offset between the maximum SMC and NDVI was not very different among different land use types except cropland, which showed the smallest offset. A correlation analysis demonstrated that, for all land use types, the timing of peak SMC had a strong positive relationship with the timing of peak NDVI, and the magnitude of SMC also lad a significant positive relationship with the timing of peal NDVI. Finally, this SMC magnitude-occurrence of maximum NDVI relationship became stronger as water-holding capacity (WHC) increased from 100 to 300mm.
