    Photovoltaic (PV) technology is one of the most promising renewable energy sources for replacing fossil fuels. Along with a big surge of PV systems, the unpredictability of solar irradiance has become a major issue, which degrades reliability, reduces economic advantages, and shortens system lifetime. An easy and cheap remedy to mitigate the unpredictability is the control and operation of PV power based on solar irradiance forecast. This work presented a method to forecast 3-hours ahead global horizontal irradiance (GHI). First, the future cloud distribution is predicted by the optical flow model that simulates cloud movement based on two sequential satellite images. Then, the cloud information at a specific location is imported to semi-empirical and physical conversion models to predict future GHI. The predicted GHI data were compared with measurement data using a pyranometer at a ground station. The comparison demonstrated that relative root-mean-square errors (rRMSE) of the semi-empirical and physical models for 3-hours ahead GHI prediction are 38.06% and 30.85%, respectively.
