Park, Seong-ryong is evaluated as the jockey of the so-called ‘A New Lyric’ which inherited Korean lyric poetry and attempted intellectual experiments, including the creation of a new writing of poem, but has been negatively evaluated for later poems. However, in the situation where there are not many detailed interpretations and reviews of Park, Seong-ryong"s poetry in each period, such negative assessment is unfair, so this paper analyzed his poems using the approach of cognitive poetics, believing that metaphor play an important role in understanding and reconsidering the evaluation.
Reading poetry through cognitive poetics can be said to be the work of scientifically revealing and systematizing the thoughts and imaginations of the poet and the grounds and relationships that can be read in it. Good literature inherits the language usage and imagination that has become familiar from past heritage, creates new (sometimes unfamiliar) language usage such as creative metaphors, and at the same time communicates with readers of the times through everyday language usage. Park, Seong-ryong"s poetry has an aspect of this communication process in a circular form through the genre of lyric poetry, and this paper attempted to reveal that aspect by reading his poems through cognitive poetics studies that interpret the consciousness and unconsciousness of literary works.
Park, Seong-ryong"s poems are look at everyday moments with unfamiliar eyes and express the triviality through language or metaphor, to specialize them. For him, his daily life is ordinary and insignificant, but he records it very preciously as a poem because it can be seen that triviality forms the universe. Such a poet"s interest reaches nature and god, who secures concrete persuasion in singing these abstract areas. It is none other than the result of the successful use of metaphors.
Despite the relatively interesting metaphor and imagination in Park, Seong-ryong"s poems, such imaginary trajectories are somewhat automated, as traditional Korean lyric poems generally are. Therefore, it is relatively difficult to explore objects in depth and read the development of various ideas about them compared to poems that value new imaginations. As discussed earlier, cognitive poetics is a methodology that interprets the consciousness revealed in poetry and the inherent unconsciousness, and Park, Seong-ryong"s poem can be seen as a poem written to show it in a familiar and more readable way within traditional and everyday categories rather than developing creative and diverse metaphors and imaginations about daily life, death, nature and God.
