Social farming is gaining increasing attention from people and the government in Korea because it can generate several socioeconomic benefits for people, especially employed in agriculture. The term Social farming(also known as care farming, green care farming, farming for health) is a farming activities that uses agricultural resources to provide social or educational care services for vulnerable people(with psycho physical disabilities, convicts, drug addicts, minors and immigrants). This farming practices aimed at promoting the care, rehabilitation and sheltered employment of disadvantaged people.
A recent upsurge of interest in Social farming in Gyeonggi-do drives this research to seek strategies for a best practice Social farming. The aim of this paper is to suggest directions and strategies for the vitalization of Social Farming in Gyeonggi-do. To this end, previous studies on social farming were reviewed to find the concepts and Necessities. We investigated the cases of social farms in targeted with vulnerable people among overseas and Korea. Previous case studies on other countries(like the Netherlands, Italy, Japan) were reviewed to explore advanced concepts and cases of social farming. And the case study in Korea provides a snapshot of the educational responses for effective policy measures of the social farming in Gyeonggi-do. Based on these analyses, this study derived some implications for decision making process.
Gyeonggi-do has both advantages of urban and rural areas, so it is necessary to promote Gyeonggi-do-type social farming linking urban and rural areas. Considering the lack of successful cases of social farming in Korea, we suggest a step-by-step strategy.
The 2 steps for vitalization of the social farming are as follows. First, it is necessary to construct foundation of Gyeonggi-do-type social farming. For this (1) Establish a social farming development strategy linking urban and rural areas, (2) Make a resarch group for establishing a promotion model of social farming and preparing detailed policies, (3) Create an organization of social farmers that could foster better relations within the commiunity.
Second, it is necessary to conduct social farming of Gyeonggi-do-type. For this (1) Establish a system of cooperation between the social farming association and local governments. Local governments in cities provide jobs and care services to retirees and the elderly people through social farm’s services, (2) Through a cooperative system with the social farming association and disability organizations, care, education, and jobs for the disabled are provided through social farms.
