In traditional Chinese Confucian society, Greed for taste has consistently been the subject of criticism. Confucius said, “A person of character is this Yan Hui! He has a bamboo bowl of rice to eat, a gourd of water to drink, and a dirty little hovel in which to live. Other people would not be able to endure his hardships, yet for Hui it has no effect on his enjoyment. A person of character is this Yan Hui!” Yan Hui is satisfied with his simple and needy life and praises his attitude of studying.
Since then, Yan Hui’s simple meals have been cited as the representative virtue of ‘Honest poverty’. The Song-Dynasty, clearly shows the characteristics of “Honest poverty” to clearly reveal one’s behavior or political ideology in reality rather than lyrical elements.
This article takes symbolism of Chinese chives in the poetry of Song-Dynasty. Chinese Chives have four major hidden meanings in poetry. Among them, chives symbolizing ‘Honest Poetry’ were mainly studied. Through the Chinese chives, the great masters of Songdae metaphorically expressed a sense of mission and responsibility of the times. Therefore, it is possible to examine the appearance of the intellectuals of the four great scholars who want to lead the Song-dynasty society soundly with the conscience of society through the “Chinese chives” in the poetry.
